Abstract: Considering the increasing demand for electricity, and the limited water resources in Egypt, adopting nuclear power plants as a dual purpose for producing electric power and fresh water has become urgent and essential. With the decision to use the nuclear power plants in Egypt, we introduce a technical demonstration for the different techniques and capabilities of NPPs that are used to supply the energy required to produce electricity fresh water by desalination. The current sources of energy which is required for the today’s desalination methods costs much, beside its pollution effects. That motivated many countries to move towards the NPPs, which are cost competitive. In this paper, various desalination processes and the most appropriate method selected are assess and evaluated. Considering the limited fresh water resources in Egypt, different techniques used as heating sources for new desalination projects in the country, like solar systems and SMRs and their cost competitiveness have been reviewed and evaluated. The potential of adopting nuclear desalination in Egypt has been discussed and evaluated from technical and economical points of view, with the emphasis on the recent desalination capabilities. The desalination techniques were assessed according to the size, type of the nuclear reactor, electrical and thermal energy capacity, based on several technical and economical criteria. From this study, it could be inferred that, RO and MSF plants, as well as hybrid systems, are considered as energy intensive processes where energy cost is a major controlling parameter in the overall cost of desalination. Oil prices instability affect to a large extent, the cost of desalination significantly, whereas NPPs offer long term availability of fuel as well as long term fuel price stability. It has also low environmental impacts compared with other conventional desalination processes.

Abstract: Recently earthquake has been occurred several times in many areas of Bangladesh at low to medium intensity. Major cities of Bangladesh are more or less vulnerable to earthquake. It is necessary to develop effective technique for minimizing the severity and often tragic consequences of earthquake. The universities & research institutes of Bangladesh are interested to enhance studies in earthquake engineering. But no facilities were developed to let the students & researchers sound about real earthquake shaking. So in order to develop the knowledge regarding earthquake among the students & researchers it is necessary to introduce a tool which will help them in realizing the earthquake shaking intensity and its vulnerability on different types of civil structure. There are several experimental techniques that can be used to test the response of structure under certain shaking intensity and to verify their seismic performance. One of the popular and efficient techniques is use of an earthquake shaking table. Structural properties (damping ratio, stiffness, natural frequency, natural period, mode shape) of a three story model frame and its deflection behavior under repetitive strong shaking is investigated through shaking table tests. Further effectiveness of various bracing system under multidirectional seismic excitation is analytically investigated also.

Abstract: Round timber with core rot was not used in the production of sawn timber for load-bearing building structures. The purpose of this work is the researches of a possibility of receiving wooden beams from round timber with a core rot. The wooden I-beam made of angular elements of the received their round forest products with decay was chosen as the object being studied. The design scheme for determining strength and deflections of the beam is a statically determinate hinged beam, loaded with a uniformly distributed load. The design spacing of the structure is assumed to be 6 meters. Under the action of a load equal to 1.5 kN/m, the beam is exposed to stress-strain state of transverse bending. A method for manufacturing I-beams from corner elements obtained as a result of cutting round logs with core rot is proposed. It has established that the calculated strength characteristics of I-beams produced according to the proposed technology may resist operational loads. Rated and tangential stresses arising from application of loads do not exceed the permissible values. Deflection of a beam does not exceed allowable deflection values. The use of round timber with core rot increases resources of wood for construction.
